Alexander Valley Vineyards Estate Chardonnay is a Sonoma County white wine grown on the winery's estate along the gravelly river banks bordering the Russian River in the Alexander Valley appellation. The winery has produced this Chardonnay since its first vintage in 1975, establishing it as one of the appellation's signature wines. The 750ml bottle is sold as a case of 12.
The wine is a blend of 99% Chardonnay and 1% Viognier, crafted using two fermentation methods to balance freshness with complexity. Seventy-five percent of the grapes are harvested at night when cool temperatures preserve natural acidity, then cold-fermented in stainless steel without malolactic fermentation or barrel aging to highlight citrus and green apple character. The remaining 25% is whole-cluster pressed and barrel-fermented in French Oak, undergoing secondary malolactic fermentation and aging on the lees for six to eight months to add roundness and body. The wine finishes with 14% alcohol by volume and uses a Stelvin screw cap closure.
On the palate, it delivers aromas of apple, pear, vanilla, and subtle floral notes with a hint of oak. Flavors of pear, apple, nectarine, juicy peach, and tropical fruits are balanced by a rich mouthfeel and slight minerality on the finish. It pairs well with shellfish, poultry, and dishes featuring cream or citrus sauces. The 2023 vintage earned 96 points from Beverage Dynamics, 92 points from Tasting Panel, and Double Gold at the San Francisco Chronicle Wine Competition.
