The Golden Hami Melon is a vibrant variety of muskmelon that originates from the Hami region of Xinjiang, China, where similar varieties have been cultivated for thousands of years. It features a striking golden-yellow exterior with characteristic webbed texturing, and pale yellow to lightly orange-hued flesh inside surrounding a central pocket of seeds that can easily be scooped out.
Golden Hamis are prized for their exceptional sweetness and distinctively crisp, firm texture โ often described as tasting like a cross between a cantaloupe and a honeydew, with hints of fresh apple and cucumber. They are sold individually and are best enjoyed when ripe, identified by a clearly sweet and subtly floral aroma and a slight yield when gently pressed.
This melon is delicious eaten fresh in wedges or cubed for fruit salads. It pairs beautifully with prosciutto and burrata, can be used as a cantaloupe substitute in summer recipes, and also shines in simple desserts with sugar, cardamom, and fresh mint. Golden Hami melons typically peak in fall and spring seasons.
