Songold plums, also known as Sun Gold, are a golden-yellow variety of South African yellow plum (Prunus salicina) prized for their sweet, juicy flavor with a mild tangy finish. The fruits average 3 to 7 centimeters in diameter with smooth, taut, thin skin that may carry a faint powdery bloom. The flesh is firm, aqueous, and succulent, softening as the fruit fully ripens, and surrounds a central stone that should be discarded.
Grown in South Africa and harvested from November through March, Songold plums are hand-picked to protect their delicate skin and exported to international markets. They are best enjoyed fresh, eaten out of hand when fully ripe. The skin is edible, and the fruit can be halved by slicing along the seam and twisting. Songold plums are also excellent sliced into fruit salads, served on cheese boards, or spooned over yogurt and cottage cheese.
For cooked uses, they blend well into smoothies and sorbets, and can be simmered into jams, compotes, chutneys, and sauces. They work equally well in sweet baked preparations such as tarts, crumbles, and galettes, and in savory dishes alongside roasted meats or stir-fries.
