The 8-inch Rieger Begonia (Begonia x hiemalis) is a vibrant, winter-blooming hybrid flowering plant sold in an 8-inch pot, perfect for adding a splash of tropical color indoors or in sheltered outdoor spaces. A cross between tuberous and wax begonias, it was popularized by Otto Rieger of Germany and first introduced at the International Flower Show in Vienna in 1964, where it won the gold medal. Also known as the Elatior begonia or winter begonia, it produces abundant rose-like blossoms in shades of red, pink, yellow, orange, and white atop large, glossy foliage.

Rieger Begonias thrive in bright, indirect light — ideally 14 hours per day for optimal blooming — and prefer daytime temperatures around 70°F (21°C) with nighttime temperatures no lower than 50°F (10°C). Water by bottom-soaking the pot for about 10 minutes, allowing the top inch of soil to dry between waterings, and always keep foliage dry to prevent powdery mildew. Use a well-draining soil mix with a pH of 5.5–6.0, and feed regularly with a high-phosphorus liquid fertilizer to encourage prolific blooms. Pinch spent flowers to keep new blooms coming.

These plants can be maintained year-round in USDA hardiness zones 9a–11b. Indoors, boost humidity with a pebble tray or humidifier and keep plants away from heating vents and cold drafts. After flowering, plants enter dormancy and can be cut back to approximately 6 inches to encourage new growth, or propagated from stem cuttings for continued enjoyment each season.
