Fresh dill is a delicate, aromatic herb with feathery green leaves and a distinctive tangy, slightly sweet flavor with subtle notes of anise and lemon. This versatile culinary herb is commonly used to season fish (especially salmon), potatoes, pickles, yogurt-based sauces like tzatziki, creamy soups, and fresh salads. It pairs beautifully with eggs, vegetables, and is essential for making classic dill pickles.
Fresh dill offers impressive nutritional benefits despite being very low in calories. It is a good source of vitamin C (8% DV per tablespoon), vitamin A (4% DV), and manganese, which support immune function, vision health, bone formation, wound healing, and metabolism. The herb is rich in antioxidants that help protect cells from damage caused by free radicals and may support heart health and cancer prevention. Traditional uses include aiding digestion, reducing gas and cramps, and freshening breath.
To store fresh dill, lightly spritz the leaves with water, wrap loosely in a paper towel, and place in a zip-top plastic bag in the vegetable drawer for up to one week.
