Joseph Drouhin Gevrey-Chambertin is a village-level Burgundy red wine crafted from 100% Pinot Noir grown in the prestigious Gevrey-Chambertin appellation of the Côte de Nuits. Maison Joseph Drouhin sources grapes from vineyards in Gevrey-Chambertin and the neighboring commune of Brochon, where lean, chalky soils with red-brown layers of clayey marl lend the wine its distinctive character. Gevrey-Chambertin is one of Burgundy's most celebrated villages, home to nine Grand Cru vineyards including the legendary Chambertin, with a winemaking heritage dating to 630 AD.
Grapes are handpicked in open-work crates and carefully sorted before total destemming. Fermentation and maceration last 2 to 3 weeks in small open vats using indigenous yeasts, with traditional punching of the cap and pumping-over. After pressing in a vertical press, the wine is aged for 14 to 16 months in French oak barrels, of which 20 to 25% are new, imparting subtle structure without overwhelming the fruit.
The wine presents a beautiful, bright ruby color. On the nose it is intensely fruity, with aromas of black cherry, wild blackberry, and liquorice, wrapped in a delicate and well-integrated woody character. With age, more complex notes emerge: mild spice, nutmeg, and leather, followed by nuances of mushroom and damp earth. On the palate, tannins are supple and harmonious, blending seamlessly with the wine's natural freshness and velvety texture. Best served at 16°C (61°F), with an optimal drinking window of 8 to 13 years and a cellaring potential of up to 15 years.
