The Kadomatsu Plum Blossom & Pine is a traditional Japanese New Year decoration (門松, "gate pine") rooted in centuries of Shinto custom. Designed to be placed at the entrance of a home or building, the kadomatsu serves as a welcoming landmark for Toshigami-sama, the Shinto deity believed to visit each family to bring happiness and good fortune on New Year's Day.
This arrangement features the classic trio of auspicious elements: pine branches, which have been venerated since ancient times as a dwelling place for the spirits of deities and symbolize longevity; bamboo, which grows straight toward the sky and represents prosperity and the warding away of troubles; and plum blossoms, which bloom in the cold of late winter and are celebrated as a symbol of strength, resilience, and endurance.
Kadomatsu are traditionally displayed in pairs on either side of the entrance — one representing male and one female — beginning after Christmas and kept through January 7th (or January 15th in some regions), after which they are ceremonially retired. This decoration brings authentic Japanese New Year tradition to any home or garden, making it an ideal seasonal accent or a meaningful gift for those who appreciate Japanese culture.
