Delphinium is a classic perennial flowering plant sold in a 3-gallon (11.36L) container, ready to plant in garden beds, borders, or large containers. Known for their tall, stately flower spikes in shades of blue, purple, lavender, pink, and white, delphiniums are a beloved staple of cottage gardens and perennial borders. Depending on the variety, plants can reach 2 to 6 feet tall at maturity, making them ideal for the back of a border or as a dramatic focal point.
Hardy in USDA zones 3–8, delphiniums thrive in full sun with at least 6 hours of direct sunlight per day and prefer rich, slightly moist, well-draining soil with a slightly acidic pH of around 5.5–6.0. In hot-summer climates (zones 7–9), they benefit from afternoon shade and a 2–3 inch layer of mulch to keep roots cool. Taller varieties may require staking to prevent toppling in wind. Feed with a slow-release granular fertilizer in early spring and again as flower buds form. Deadhead spent blooms to encourage rebloom and cut back foliage after the first frost.
Delphiniums are excellent cut flowers and also dry beautifully for arrangements. They are highly attractive to bees, butterflies, and hummingbirds, making them a valuable addition to pollinator gardens. Plants are generally deer resistant. A 3-gallon container typically contains a plant that is 2–4 years old and 12–30 inches in size, establishing quickly in the landscape.
