This ornamental flowering pear (Pyrus calleryana) is sold in a #15 nursery trade container, which holds approximately 9.9 gallons (37.0 liters) of growing medium. The most widely sold cultivar is 'Chanticleer' (also known as 'Cleveland Select' or 'Glen's Form'), prized for its tight, narrow pyramidal to near-columnar silhouette. Trees typically mature to 25–35 feet tall with a spread of 13–16 feet and are thornless.
In early spring, before the leaves emerge, the tree is covered in dense clusters of showy, creamy-white five-petaled flowers — one of the most dramatic spring blooming ornamentals available. Summer brings glossy dark green foliage with distinctively wavy-margined leaves that flutter in the breeze. Fall color is exceptional, turning reddish-purple to bronze-red before leaf drop.
This tree is low-maintenance and adaptable to a wide range of conditions, including heavy clay soils and urban environments. It tolerates drought once established and performs best in full sun. USDA Hardiness Zones 5–9. Suitable for use as a street tree, specimen, or small shade tree, and attracts birds. Note that Pyrus calleryana cultivars are listed as invasive or noxious in several Midwestern states — check local regulations before planting.
