Penfolds RWT Bin 798 Shiraz is one of Australia's most acclaimed red wines, sourced exclusively from the Barossa Valley and matured for 16 months in French oak hogsheads (64% new, 36% one-year-old). The name "RWT" stands for "Red Winemaking Trial," reflecting the developmental project that began in 1995 and was officially launched with the 1997 vintage. It holds the Bin 798 designation and sits second only to Grange in the Penfolds Shiraz hierarchy.
The wine is opulent and fleshy in style, contrasting with the more muscular Grange. Fruit is selected primarily for its aromatic qualities, plush texture, and fine tannins. On the nose, expect blueberry, goji berry, loganberry, and dark chocolate with hazelnut and liquorice notes, along with barrel-ferment complexity. On the palate, the wine is viscous and lush, with redcurrant, blackberry, and black forest cake fruits, silky powdery tannins, and remarkable length and balance.
The 2018 vintage earned 99 points from Andrew Caillard MW, 98 points from Robert Parker Wine Advocate (Joe Czerwinski), and 96 points from James Suckling. Built for long-term cellaring, the wine has the concentration and balance to develop beautifully over two decades or more.
