Gundlach Bundschu Chardonnay Sonoma Coast is a food-friendly white wine crafted at the historic Rhinefarm estate in Sonoma, California, one of America's oldest continuously family-owned wineries. This 100% Chardonnay is grown across 32 acres of estate vines with an average age of 30 years, including some of the oldest Chardonnay vines in California — planted in 1970. The vineyard sits at the convergence of two cooling influences: Pacific breezes funneling through the Petaluma Gap and fog from San Pablo Bay, creating ideal conditions for slow, flavorful ripening at naturally low yields of around 3 tons per acre. Soils are Huichica clay loam over compacted Carneros Bay sediment, which restricts vine vigor and concentrates fruit intensity.
The winemaking philosophy emphasizes elegance and natural acidity over heavy oak. Grapes are hand-harvested in multiple lots, whole-cluster pressed, and fermented in a combination of French oak barrels (approximately 80%) and stainless steel tanks to preserve brightness. No malolactic fermentation is performed, keeping the wine fresh and vibrant. The wine undergoes weekly battonage and ten months of aging in French oak — only 20% new — resulting in subtle oak integration without dominating the fruit. Tasting notes include green apple, lemon curd, pomelo, buttered popcorn, and baking spice, with a balanced, food-friendly finish. It pairs well with oysters, seafood, mild cheeses such as Brie and Havarti, and weekend brunch. Alcohol is approximately 14.2%.
