La Rioja Alta Gran Reserva 904 is one of Spain's most celebrated red wines, produced by the historic La Rioja Alta, S.A. winery in the Rioja DOCa appellation. This magnum format (1.5L) contains six bottles' worth of an exceptional wine that has earned consistent acclaim from leading critics, including scores of 96–97 from James Suckling, Robert Parker, Tim Atkin MW, and Guía Peñín.
The wine is composed primarily of Tempranillo (90%), sourced from estate vineyards in Villalba, Briñas, and Rodezno, blended with 10% Graciano from the Montecillo vineyard in Fuenmayor. Grapes are handpicked in small crates with an initial cluster selection in the vineyard, then transported refrigerated to preserve integrity. After optical sorting, natural alcoholic and malolactic fermentation takes place, followed by four years of aging in American oak barrels with an average age of 4.5 years, with traditional racking every six months.
The wine presents a deep garnet red color with a bright ruby rim. On the nose it shows high intensity and aromatic complexity, with initial notes of wild red berries, black cherry, and blueberries giving way to aromas of tobacco, black pepper, tea leaves, coffee, mocha, vanilla, and cinnamon. On the palate it is refined, balanced, and elegant, with outstanding freshness and polished, silky tannins leading to a sophisticated finish. It pairs ideally with red and white meats, fish, and chocolate desserts, and also excels as an after-dinner wine.
