Fresh wild-caught monkfish fillet, sold by the pound. Monkfish is known as the "poor man's lobster" due to its firm, white flesh that develops a texture remarkably similar to lobster tail when cooked. The fillets are typically large and shaped similar to a pork tenderloin, tapering from a thick end to a point.
The firm flesh makes monkfish extremely versatile and suitable for multiple cooking methods including baking, grilling, sautéing, and frying. Simple preparations work well, such as baking with butter, salt, and pepper, or rubbing with minced garlic before cooking. The sturdy texture also holds up excellently on the grill. More elaborate preparations include bacon-wrapped monkfish, piccata with caperberries and preserved lemons, or Japanese-style hot pot.
Important preparation note: The membrane should be removed before cooking as it can become tough and chewy. Wild-caught monkfish is considered a premium seafood option prized for its unique texture and mild, sweet flavor.
