Branzino, also known as European sea bass, is a Mediterranean fish prized for its delicate, firm white meat with a soft, flaky texture and subtly sweet, buttery flavor. This farm-raised branzino is sold whole and fresh, typically weighing 12-18 ounces per fish.
Rich in lean protein with 23.8 grams per fillet and only 125 calories per serving, branzino is an excellent heart-healthy choice. It provides 0.87 grams of omega-3 fatty acids per fillet, along with essential vitamins including vitamin D, vitamin E, vitamin B6, vitamin B12, niacin, thiamin, and riboflavin. The fish is naturally rich in minerals including selenium (86% daily value per fillet), iodine, calcium, zinc, potassium, phosphorus, and magnesium. The FDA categorizes branzino as a "best choice" regarding mercury levels, recommending 2-3 servings per week.
Branzino is typically served whole and can be grilled, pan-fried, roasted, or baked. Popular preparations include grilling with olive oil and herbs, baking in foil with lemon slices and seasonings, or pan-frying with a light breading. The fish is often cooked in its skin to preserve moisture and enhance flavor, and pairs beautifully with Mediterranean herbs and vegetables.
