The Kimberly Queen Fern (Nephrolepis obliterata), also known as the Australian Sword Fern, is a bold tropical fern prized for its upright, sword-shaped dark green fronds. Sold in a 12-inch pot, this plant arrives as a well-established specimen ready for indoor or outdoor display. It grows at a fast rate, reaching up to 3 feet tall and 3 feet wide at maturity, with mature fronds developing attractive spore spots on the undersides of each leaf.
This low-maintenance fern thrives in partial shade to medium indoor light, making it equally at home on shaded patios, decks, and outdoor living areas as it is indoors near a bright window. It prefers consistently moist, well-draining soil and should be watered once or twice per week to keep the soil surface from drying out completely. The Kimberly Queen Fern is a natural air purifier when grown indoors and is resistant to deer and rabbits outdoors. It pairs beautifully with caladiums, begonias, gingers, and New Guinea impatiens in mixed container arrangements.
Hardy in USDA zones 9–11, this fern can be grown as a year-round outdoor evergreen in tropical and subtropical climates. In colder regions, move it indoors before the first frost. Indoors, maintain high humidity by grouping with other plants or placing near a humidifier to prevent brown, crispy frond tips. Fertilize with any general-purpose fertilizer twice a year, or more frequently for faster growth. Not recommended for human or animal consumption.
