Lava Cap Reserve Zinfandel is a celebrated red wine from the El Dorado AVA in the Sierra Foothills of California, produced by one of the region's most acclaimed Zinfandel makers. The winery, established in 1981 and situated in the Apple Hill area of Placerville at roughly 3,000 feet elevation, is recognized for crafting elegant, high-altitude expressions that defy the grape's jammier stereotypes.
This Reserve bottling draws from estate and neighboring El Dorado AVA vineyards at elevations ranging from 2,400 to 2,800 feet, where volcanic soils and heritage vines—most exceeding 45 years of age—contribute exceptional depth and character. Grapes are handpicked at moderate sugar levels, fermented in stainless steel, then aged 24 months in François Frères French oak barrels to develop structure and complexity.
On the nose, the wine opens with subtle notes of briar and spice before giving way to aromas of raspberry liqueur. The palate delivers layered blackberry and black cherry fruit with a warm, luscious finish accented by toasty oak. The style favors elegance over power, with vivid red fruit, bright acidity, and moderate tannins—hallmarks of Sierra Foothills viticulture at altitude. Alcohol content is 15.10%. Rated 93 points by Wine Enthusiast. Pairs well with tri-tip, burgers, and Italian fare.
