Masi Costasera Amarone della Valpolicella Classico DOCG is a prestigious Italian red wine from the Veneto region, often called the "gentle giant" of Amarone. Produced by the Boscaini family at Masi Agricola, whose winemaking heritage in Valpolicella dates back to 1772, this wine stands alongside Barolo and Brunello as part of the aristocracy of Italian wine.
The wine is crafted from a blend of 70% Corvina, 25% Rondinella, and 5% Molinara grapes sourced from sunset-facing slopes overlooking Lake Garda. Masi employs their renowned appassimento technique, laying harvested grapes on traditional bamboo racks for 2–3 months during winter to concentrate aromas, color, and flavor through natural partial dehydration. The wine is then aged for 24 months in large Slavonian oak barrels (80%) and Allier barriques (20%).
The wine pours a very dark ruby red. On the nose it offers baked fruit, plums, cherries, dried figs, and balsamic traces of anise and mint. The palate delivers rich fruity flavors with hints of coffee, cocoa, chocolate, and cinnamon, balanced by bright acidity and noble, delicate tannins leading to a long finish. At 15% alcohol, it is powerful yet refined, with an estimated cellar life of 30–35 years. Best served at 18–20°C, it pairs excellently with red meats, game, quail, richly flavored dishes, and aged cheeses such as Parmesan, Pecorino, and Gorgonzola. Contains sulphites.
