Jim Barry The Armagh Shiraz is one of Australia's most prestigious single-vineyard wines, crafted from a historic vineyard in Clare Valley, South Australia. The Armagh vineyard was planted in 1968 with premium Shiraz cuttings sourced from the renowned Wendouree vineyard, one of Clare Valley's oldest estates dating back to 1893. This exceptional site features rare ancient gravel deposits at elevations between 1,175 and 1,204 feet, with contoured rows that ripen at different times, contributing to the wine's remarkable complexity and balance.
The wine holds "Exceptional" status in Langton's Classification of Australian Wine, placing it alongside Australia's finest wines like Penfolds Grange and Henschke Hill of Grace. First released in 1985, The Armagh was created with the ambition to produce Australia's finest Shiraz, inspired by the great wines of Bordeaux. The vineyard's low yields of approximately 20 hectoliters per hectare and high skin-to-juice ratio result in wines with powerfully expressive aromas, chocolaty richness, and sinuous structure.
Modern vintages emphasize delicate red fruits, floral accents, and distinctive Clare Valley spice and garrigue notes, aged in French oak hogsheads and puncheons for enhanced finesse. The wine exhibits excellent aging potential with deep, concentrated fruit, velvety texture, and remarkable balance between ripe fruit, fine-grained tannins, and vibrant acidity. Professional critics consistently award scores of 93-97 points, praising its delineation, freshness, and graceful evolution with age. The Armagh became the first Australian Shiraz sold through the prestigious La Place de Bordeaux in 2020.
