Imported Asian Pears are round, crisp fruits with golden-yellow to russet-brown skin and ivory-white flesh. Unlike European pears, Asian pears ripen on the tree and maintain their characteristic firm, crunchy texture long after harvest, giving them an apple-like bite with an exceptionally juicy interior. Each 2 lb package typically contains several whole pears carefully packed to prevent bruising.
Known by several names including apple pears and sand pears, these fruits offer a sweet, mild flavor with subtle floral notes and low acidity. Native to Japan and China where they have been cultivated for over 3,000 years, Asian pears are widely enjoyed throughout Asia and have become popular in North America. Common varieties include round Japanese-style and Korean Shingo pears with bronze russet skin, as well as Chinese-style ya li pears with a more elongated silhouette.
Asian pears are an excellent source of dietary fiber, especially when eaten with the skin. They also provide potassium, Vitamin K, copper, and Vitamin C. Their juice is traditionally used as a natural meat tenderizer and is a key ingredient in Korean barbecue marinades. The fruit pairs well with blue cheese or aged Gouda on a cheese board, adds a satisfying crunch to salads and poke bowls, and can be pickled to preserve their texture. At room temperature, Asian pears keep well for two to three weeks.
