The Windmill Palm (Trachycarpus fortunei), also known as the Chinese Windmill Palm, Chusan Palm, or Fortune Palm, is one of the most cold-hardy palm trees available, making it an excellent choice for gardeners in USDA Hardiness Zones 7–11. Unlike most palms, it can tolerate temperatures as low as 10°F, bringing tropical appeal to climates far beyond the typical palm-growing range.
This specimen is sold in a approximately 10-gallon grower's pot, providing a well-established root system for faster establishment in your landscape. The tree features distinctive fan-shaped fronds arranged symmetrically atop a fibrous, shaggy trunk, forming a lush crown that can spread 6 to 15 feet wide at maturity. At full size, Windmill Palms reach 20 to 40 feet tall, though growth is slow — typically under 8 inches per year — making them excellent as long-term landscape focal points.
Plant in full sun to partial shade in well-draining soil. The Windmill Palm is adaptable to a range of soil types, naturally pest-resistant, and virtually debris-free. It is both drought-tolerant and deer-resistant once established. Ideal as an accent piece near a pool, deck, or driveway, or grown in a large container on a patio or porch. Water regularly and fertilize with a balanced palm fertilizer (such as an 8-8-8 formula) in spring and summer to encourage healthy growth.
