Viña Almaviva is a prestigious Chilean red wine created as a collaboration between Baron Philippe de Rothschild SA (owners of Château Mouton Rothschild in Bordeaux) and Viña Concha y Toro SA, launched in 1997 to produce an exceptional Franco-Chilean Bordeaux-style blend. This wine comes from the renowned Puente Alto sub-region of the Maipo Valley, an area celebrated for its ideal terroir featuring well-drained soils, warm days, and cool nights that produce expressive Cabernet Sauvignon-driven wines with both power and elegance.

The blend typically comprises approximately 71% Cabernet Sauvignon, 22% Carménère, 5% Cabernet Franc, and 2% Petit Verdot, aged for 20 months in French oak barrels with about 70-73% new oak. The wine captivates with its deep ruby red color and complex aromas of blackberry, cassis, ripe black plum, violet, cedar, cigar box, graphite, and subtle tobacco leaf. On the palate, it delivers full-bodied richness with plush dark fruit flavors including black cherry and blackcurrant, layered with dark chocolate, mocha, black pepper spice, and refined tannin structure. The Carménère contributes a distinctive peppery warmth and herbal complexity, while the oak aging adds cedar, vanilla, and velvety texture.

Critics have consistently praised Almaviva, with James Suckling awarding 98 points to recent vintages, calling it fresh and elegant with silky tannins and a very long finish. Wine Advocate scores it in the mid-to-high 90s (96 points), noting its finesse, refined profile, and exceptional aging potential. The wine shows outstanding balance between concentration and freshness, with fine-grained tannins and a lingering finish featuring dark chocolate, cedar-box spice, and mineral notes. This is a wine that combines immediate pleasure with long-term promise, representing one of the elite Chilean red blends and a faithful expression of Puente Alto's unique terroir.
