Tommasi Ripasso Valpolicella Classico Superiore is an Italian red wine from the Veneto region that bridges the gap between Valpolicella Classico and Amarone. This wine is crafted using the traditional Ripasso method, where Valpolicella Classico Superiore is re-fermented on the warm grape skins from Amarone production for 12-13 days, enriching its aromas, body, and complexity. The grapes come from three prestigious Tommasi family vineyards: Conca d'Oro, La Groletta, and De Buris, located in the hilly Valpolicella Classica zone.
The wine is a blend of 70% Corvina Veronese, 25% Rondinella, and 5% Corvinone grapes. After the initial fermentation in stainless steel for about 9-15 days and the Ripasso re-fermentation process, the wine is aged for 18 months in 65 hectoliter Slavonian oak barrels, followed by 6 months of bottle aging. This results in a deep ruby red color with rich, intensely spicy aromas featuring black pepper, cherry jam, tobacco, and raisin notes. The palate is full-bodied yet elegant, with gentle, silky tannins, sweet red cherry flavors, and a very long finish.
With 13.5% alcohol content, this wine has received critical acclaim including 92 points from James Suckling (2015, 2016, 2018 vintages), 90 points from Wine Spectator (2015), and 93 points from James Suckling (2017). Tommasi was the first family to proudly display the Ripasso name on a wine label. The wine pairs excellently with boiled, braised, or grilled meats and should be served at 16-18ยฐC.
