Lupines (Lupinus spp.) are vibrant perennial flowering plants prized for their tall, upright spikes of pea-like blooms in a wide array of colors. This Costco offering provides assorted varieties in a 1.5-gallon (5.7L) nursery container, ready to transplant directly into the garden in spring or fall.
These hardy perennials thrive in USDA Hardiness Zones 3–7 and bloom from late spring through early summer (April to June), producing striking flower spikes in shades of blue, pink, purple, red, white, and yellow—often featuring beautiful bi-colored blooms. Plants grow 1 to 4 feet tall, with attractive grey-green palmate foliage accented by silvery hairs that add ornamental interest even when not in flower.
Lupines prefer full sun to partial shade and well-draining, sandy or loamy soil with a slightly acidic to neutral pH. As members of the legume family, they are nitrogen-fixers that naturally enrich the soil over time. They are low-maintenance, deer-resistant, and attract butterflies and other pollinators, making them a standout addition to cottage gardens, meadowscapes, and perennial borders.
Plant in a location with loose, deeply worked soil to accommodate the plant's long taproot, spacing larger varieties 2 to 3 feet apart. Deadheading spent flower spikes encourages additional blooms and prolongs the display throughout the season. Mulch around the base to keep roots cool and provide winter protection, taking care not to allow mulch to contact the crown.
