Valley View Winery's Tempranillo from the Applegate Valley, Oregon, is a remarkable expression of the varietal, combining Old-World character with the unique terroir of the Pacific Northwest. Crafted from 100% Tempranillo (Tinta Roriz) estate-grown fruit, including own-rooted vines over 40 years old, this wine showcases the dedication to quality and tradition that has defined Valley View Winery since 1972 as one of Oregon's pioneering wineries.
This wine opens with an enticing bouquet of ripe blackcap raspberries, fig, lavender, and a subtle hint of cinnamon. On the palate, brawny tannins provide structure, supporting vibrant flavors of quince and tart cherry. Earthy undertones and a whisper of pipe tobacco add depth, while a touch of spice guides the wine toward its distinctive dark chocolate finish. The balance of fruit, spice, and tannin creates a bold yet refined wine with a long, satisfying finish.
The winemaking process includes hand-picked and destemmed fruit with resident yeast fermentation in bins and open-top tanks, aged 16 months in 2-year-old French oak barriques. The vineyard features clonal selections from Valdepeñas, Toro, and Duero, with vines ranging from 15 to 44 years old. The vintage growing season featured early bud break in mid-April, followed by warm summer temperatures and near-record heat in late summer, with lower yields allowing for exceptional concentration and color development. Bottled at 14.6% ABV by winemaker Michael Brunson.
