Minneola Tangelos are a premium citrus hybrid developed by the USDA in 1931, created by crossing a Dancy tangerine with a Duncan grapefruit. Also known as Honeybells, these large fruits average 7 to 9 centimeters in diameter and are easily identified by their distinctive elongated neck at the stem end. The bright red-orange rind is thin, glossy, and easy to peel, revealing 10 to 12 segments of soft, juicy flesh that is typically seedless or contains only a few seeds.
The flavor is a sweet-tart blend of tangy grapefruit acidity and fragrant, honeyed tangerine sweetness. Minneola Tangelos are a seasonal variety available from winter through early spring, making them a prized find at Costco during the holiday season. This 5-pound bag provides a generous supply for fresh eating, juicing, smoothies, fruit salads, and citrus-based sauces and dressings. They are an excellent source of vitamin C and dietary fiber, and their natural sweetness makes them a healthy, refreshing snack for the whole family.
Store whole, unpeeled tangelos at room temperature for 4 to 7 days or refrigerate for up to 2 weeks.
