Moro blood oranges are the most widely grown variety of blood orange, prized for their distinctive dark purple to deep red interior flesh and raspberry-like flavor profile. These oranges have a characteristic tartness with berry notes that distinguish them from traditional sweet oranges. The unique coloring develops from anthocyanin pigments that intensify as the fruit experiences cold winter temperatures, resulting in fruit with red-blushed exterior skin and dramatically pigmented interior flesh ranging from dark red to purple.
Moro blood oranges are medium-sized citrus with moderate ease of peeling, similar to navel oranges. They contain minimal to no seeds, making them excellent for both fresh eating and juicing. The variety is first to market each season, appearing in December and reaching peak quality from February through April. These oranges are typically sourced from California growers during the North American season, with occasional imports from Australia and Italy during off-season months.
The fruit offers a complex flavor combining traditional orange sweetness with pronounced tartness and distinctive raspberry undertones. This makes them versatile for both culinary applications and fresh consumption. Blood oranges are commonly used in jams, granitas, sorbets, salads, and cocktails where their vibrant color and unique flavor add visual appeal and taste complexity.
