The Weeping Cherry Tree (Prunus x subhirtella) is a graceful, deciduous ornamental tree native to Japan, sold here in a #15 nursery container (15-gallon pot). The "Assorted" designation indicates the lot may include multiple cultivars, all sharing the hallmark pendulous, fountain-like branching structure that makes this one of the most recognizable flowering trees in the landscape.
In early spring, before the foliage emerges, the tree produces a spectacular flush of light pink blooms in pendant clusters of 2-5 flowers along slender, weeping branches. Flowers may be single or double depending on the cultivar, and the display typically lasts about one week. The dark green, lance-shaped leaves that follow turn golden yellow in autumn before dropping for the season.
Trees in #15 containers are typically 6-8 feet tall at the time of purchase. At maturity, Weeping Cherry trees reach 15-40 feet in height with a spread of 15-25 feet, growing at a rapid rate. These trees are grafted onto Prunus avium rootstock at approximately 4-5 feet in height to create the weeping form. Any growth arising at or below the graft union should be removed promptly, as it will not display the desired weeping habit. Weeping branches can also be selectively pruned to allow clearance for walking or planting beneath the canopy.
Plant in full sun to partial shade in moist, well-drained soil. Once established, the tree adapts well to clay, loam, and sandy soils and tolerates compaction, heat, and drier conditions. Hardy in USDA Zones 5a through 8b, making it suitable for a wide range of climates across the United States. This tree is excellent as a specimen, lawn focal point, water garden accent, or border planting in Asian-inspired garden designs.
All parts of Prunus species can be toxic to cats, dogs, and horses.
