The Coast Redwood, scientifically known as Sequoia sempervirens, is the tallest tree species in the world and can live for over 2,000 years. This evergreen conifer comes in a 9.9 gallon container and features a densely branched pyramidal shape when young, maturing into a more conical form as it ages. The tree is characterized by thick, reddish-brown, deeply furrowed bark and needle-like evergreen foliage that is bright green above with two white stomal bands beneath.

Coast Redwoods are one of the fastest-growing conifers, averaging 3 feet of growth per year. In optimal conditions, mature specimens can reach heights of 60 to 200 feet or more with a spread of 15 to 25 feet. The variety sold at Costco may include cultivars such as 'Aptos Blue' or other assorted Coast Redwood varieties suitable for home landscaping.

This tree performs best in rich, moist, well-drained soil with high organic content, in full sun to light dappled shade. It thrives in cool, moist, coastal climates where it can benefit from ample fog and cool summer temperatures. The tree prefers consistently moist conditions and is intolerant of dry soil. It produces small, hard, woody cones that are reddish-brown and measure 0.5 to 1 inch long, ripening in the first year. Coast Redwoods support each other through a network of interconnected roots and fungi, so they grow best when planted in groups.
