A stunning ornamental weeping cherry tree (Prunus subhirtella or Prunus pendula) sold in a #7 (7-gallon) nursery container, established and ready to plant. These deciduous trees are celebrated for their graceful, cascading branches that erupt into spectacular displays of pink to white blossoms in early spring, often blooming before the foliage even emerges. Originally from Japan, weeping cherry trees have been prized as landscape specimens for centuries and symbolize renewal in Japanese culture. Costco offers this tree seasonally in spring.
At maturity, standard weeping cherry varieties reach 15–25 feet tall with a similar spread, while dwarf varieties stay compact at 6–10 feet. The #7 container (7-gallon, approximately 13.5–14 inches in diameter) holds a well-established tree. These are typically top-grafted trees, meaning the weeping scion is grafted onto an upright rootstock to create the iconic umbrella-like silhouette. After the spring bloom, attractive glossy green foliage fills the canopy through summer, transitioning to shades of gold, orange, and red in fall before the tree goes dormant for winter.
Weeping cherry trees require full sun with at least 6–8 hours of direct sunlight daily and prefer well-drained, loamy soil with a neutral to slightly acidic pH (5.5–8.0). They adapt to clay, loam, sand, or silt soils. Once established they are moderately drought-tolerant, though young trees benefit from consistent watering until roots are settled. Maintenance is very low — pruning is rarely needed beyond removing dead, diseased, or upward-growing branches. Small, pea-sized inedible berries appear in late spring and attract songbirds and other wildlife. Hardy in USDA zones 5–10 (verify for specific variety). Expected lifespan is 30–40 years, making this a long-term landscape investment.
