Aprodine is an over-the-counter combination medication containing pseudoephedrine HCl 60mg (nasal decongestant) and triprolidine HCl 2.5mg (antihistamine). This medication provides temporary relief of symptoms due to the common cold or hay fever (allergic rhinitis), including runny nose, sneezing, nasal congestion, itchy and watery eyes, and itching of the nose or throat.
Each tablet works by combining two active ingredients: pseudoephedrine relieves congestion and pressure by constricting blood vessels around the nose and sinuses, while triprolidine blocks histamine to reduce runny nose, sneezing, and watery eyes. The medication typically starts working within 30 minutes to an hour after taking it.
For adults and children 12 years and older, the recommended dose is 1 tablet by mouth every 4 to 6 hours as needed, not to exceed 4 tablets in a 24-hour period. This medication is available over the counter but must be purchased at the pharmacy counter with photo identification due to federal regulations on pseudoephedrine. Possible side effects include drowsiness, dizziness, dry mouth, and nervousness. Contains inactive ingredients: hypromellose, magnesium stearate, polyethylene glycol, silicified microcrystalline cellulose, and titanium dioxide.
