The Dutton-Goldfield Pinot Noir from the Russian River Valley is a Sonoma County estate wine crafted by the longtime partnership of Steve Dutton and Dan Goldfield. Founded in 1998 with a shared vision of producing wines that express the personality of cool-climate vineyards, Dutton-Goldfield sources its fruit from Dutton Ranch, which farms over eighty unique vineyards situated in the coldest corners of the Russian River Valley, primarily in the Green Valley sub-appellation. The Pacific Ocean fog that flows through the Petaluma Gap ensures slow and steady ripening, preserving bright acidity and developing complex flavors.
The Dutton Ranch Pinot Noir blend draws from multiple distinct vineyard blocks including Bush, Galante, Emerald Ridge, Goff, Marty's #2, Jentoft, and Ruxton vineyards. Emerald Ridge, Goff, and others in the heart of Green Valley each contribute a unique variation of fruit to heighten complexity, while Ruxton, perched high on Stoetz Ridge on the western edge of the Russian River Valley, adds great color and focus. All vineyards in the blend are Sonoma County Certified Sustainable.
The wine delivers juicy berry fruit on both the nose and palate with solid structure and fine tannins. The 2022 vintage bursts from the glass with aromas of blackberry, cranberry, forest floor, and Angostura bitters, followed by concentrated, spice and earth-laced flavors on a medium-bodied palate. Soft, dusty tannins and bright, juicy acidity lead to a long, spicy finish. Aged 10 months in 40% new French oak. The 2022 vintage earned 93 points from Robert Parker's Wine Advocate, 92 points from James Suckling, and 90 points from Wine Spectator, which recommends drinking through 2027.
