A 5-gallon nursery fig tree (Ficus carica), an edible fruit-bearing tree suitable for planting in the ground or in a large container. Costco typically carries popular self-fertile varieties such as Black Mission, Chicago Hardy, Brown Turkey, and Desert King, which are well-suited for a range of growing climates across the United States.
Fig trees thrive in full sun with at least 7 hours of direct sunlight per day. They prefer light, well-draining soil and consistent moisture. A 5-gallon nursery tree planted in a container should be placed in a pot at least 18 inches in diameter to allow proper root development. Fig trees tolerate temperatures down to approximately 20°F when dormant, and cold-climate varieties can be moved indoors during freezing winters.
When properly cared for, fig trees typically produce two crops per season: an early "breva" crop in May through June and a main crop in late summer. Trees are self-fertile and do not require a separate pollinator to produce fruit. Apply a slow-release fertilizer at the start of the growing season and plant in spring after the last frost in colder climates.
