Antinori Tignanello is one of the most historically significant wines in Italian viticulture—a benchmark "Super Tuscan" that transformed the country's wine industry. This 1.5L Magnum bottle from Marchesi Antinori presents Tignanello as a Toscana IGT wine blended primarily from Sangiovese with additions of Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc, sourced exclusively from the 190-acre (77-hectare) Tignanello estate vineyard in the heart of Chianti Classico, Tuscany. The vineyard's limestone-rich soils and southwestern exposure at 1,150–1,325 feet (350–400 meters) above sea level impart distinctive minerality and structured elegance.
Tignanello holds a unique place in wine history: it was the first Sangiovese aged in small oak barriques, the first modern Italian red to incorporate non-traditional international varieties such as Cabernet in the blend, and among the first reds from the Chianti Classico region produced entirely without white grapes. Only made in exceptional vintages, the wine undergoes fermentation in truncated conical tanks with careful maceration to preserve aromas and develop supple tannins, followed by malolactic fermentation in small oak barrels and approximately 13 months of aging in predominantly new French oak (with a small percentage of Hungarian oak). An additional 12 months of bottle aging precedes release. The iconic label, featuring a stylized sun, was designed by Italian graphic designer Silvio Coppola in 1974.
Tasting notes describe an intensely ruby red color with purple hues, opening with aromas of cherries, ripe black cherries, pomegranate, violets, and fresh balsamic hints, complemented by elegant notes of vanilla. The palate is dense yet fresh with supple savory tannins and a lengthy finish. The wine regularly earns outstanding critical scores including 96 points from Wine Spectator and 98/100 from Vinous.
