Anatomy No. 1 Cabernet Sauvignon is a Napa Valley red wine produced by Hesperian Wines under the direction of Bordeaux-trained winemaker Philippe Langner. A passion-project bottling, it draws fruit from select vineyard sites across Napa Valley — including the two-acre Upstream Vineyard in Coombsville and the four-acre Eagle's Nest on Monticello Road — sites that also contribute to Langner's flagship Hesperian Cabernets retailing at $100 and above.
The wine opens with aromas of ripe blackcurrant, blackberry compote, and black cherry skin, layered with cedar shavings, graphite, and a hint of cocoa powder. Subtle notes of espresso bean, clove, and warm oak spice emerge as it breathes. On the palate it is medium to full-bodied with a supple entry, flavors of cassis, dark plum, and blackberry framed by fine-grained tannins and fresh acidity. Mid-palate notes of mocha, toasted vanilla, and baking spice add richness while maintaining lift. The finish is long, lingering on dark berry skin, graphite, and savory herb tones. ABV: 14.2%.
After harvest, the wine is aged 18 months in French oak before additional bottle aging, a practice rarely seen at this price point. Langner's restrained extraction and measured oak use yield a wine that reflects Napa's richness while maintaining elegance and drinkability. Serve at 60–65°F in a Bordeaux-style glass. Pairs well with grilled or roasted beef, lamb, hearty mushroom dishes, and aged hard cheeses.
