Viña Eguía Reserva is a 100% Tempranillo wine from the prestigious Rioja DOCa appellation in Spain, produced by Bodegas Muriel. Grapes are sourced from 25 to 40-year-old vines grown in clay-ferrous and clay-limestone soils across the Rioja Alavesa and Rioja Alta sub-zones. Fermentation takes place over approximately 15 days in temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks with daily pump-overs, followed by malolactic fermentation before barrel aging.
The wine is aged for 24 months in American oak barrels — a blend of new and seasoned cooperage — then rested an additional 12 months in bottle before release, meeting and exceeding the Rioja Reserva classification requirements. This extended aging imparts layered notes of vanilla, spice, and Mediterranean herbs to the wine's core of ripe red and black fruit.
In the glass, the wine shows a bright ruby to dark garnet color. The nose is expressive and complex, offering aromas of ripe cherries, cassis, licorice, tobacco, vanilla, and a hint of saddle leather. On the palate it is round and velvety with well-integrated, downy tannins, flavors of black cherry, plum, roasted herbs, and a touch of chocolaty oak, leading to a long and elegant finish. The wine has earned scores of 90 to 93 points from Wine Enthusiast (Best Buy) and James Suckling across multiple vintages.
It pairs well with red meats, lamb, beef stews, roasted poultry, and aged cheeses. Serve at 16–18°C (61–65°F). Alcohol content is approximately 13.5% ABV.
