The Fontanafredda Barolo del Comune di Serralunga d'Alba DOCG is the flagship wine of the historic Fontanafredda estate, founded in 1858 in the Langhe region of Piedmont, Italy. Crafted from 100% Nebbiolo grapes grown in the renowned Serralunga d'Alba commune, this was the first commune-designated Barolo bottling ever released on the market. Since the 2018 harvest, Fontanafredda has been the largest certified organic winery in Piedmont, farming its 247 acres of vineyards sustainably on the single largest contiguous wine estate in the Langhe.
Vineyards are situated at 300–400 meters above sea level on south and southwest-facing slopes, with soils of limestone and grey marl alternating with sand — the hallmark of Serralunga d'Alba, a commune celebrated for producing Barolos of exceptional structure, power, and refinement. The wine is fermented over 15 days in stainless steel vats at 86–88°F, followed by an additional 15-day maceration for optimal phenolic extraction. It is then aged one year in Allier barriques, two years in 2,000-liter oak casks, and bottled for a further 12 months before release.
In the glass, this Barolo shows a bright ruby red color with garnet reflections. The bouquet offers withered rose, underwood, and spice, giving way to bright cherry, small red fruit, and a hint of mint on the palate. The tannins are young and energetic yet refined, the texture silky and vibrant, with a long, lingering finish that signals outstanding aging potential. Awarded 93 points by Wine Spectator for the 2019 vintage and ranked #78 in the Wine Spectator Top 100 of 2022. ABV 14%, closed with cork.
