This #10 container-grown Japanese Maple (Acer palmatum var. dissectum) is a laceleaf, cutleaf, or threadleaf Japanese maple — a slow-growing, rounded deciduous shrub prized for its deeply dissected, feathery foliage and elegant cascading branching habit. The #10 designation refers to a 10-gallon nursery container (approximately 9.68 gallons / 36.6 liters), representing a well-established specimen ready for landscape planting.
Acer dissectum typically matures to 6–12 feet tall with a wider spread of 9–15 feet, making it an excellent focal point, accent planting, or specimen tree for home gardens, patios, and water features. Its palmate leaves, each with 7–11 deeply incised lobes cut to the base of the leaf, create a lacy, textural appearance throughout the growing season. Small reddish-purple flowers appear in spring, followed by winged samaras in fall. Fall color is spectacular, with shades of yellow, red, purple, and bronze.
Best grown in moist, organically rich, slightly acidic, well-drained soil in full sun to part shade. Performs well in USDA Hardiness Zones 5–9. Mulch around the base helps retain soil moisture and keep roots cool. Avoid hot, dry, or windy sites. Pruning should be kept minimal and performed only in late fall through mid-winter. Japanese maples are generally rabbit-tolerant and suitable near black walnut trees.
