Abbazia di Novacella Pinot Grigio is a classic Alto Adige white wine from one of Italy's most historic wineries, sold here as a case of 12 bottles (750mL each). Abbazia di Novacella — Kloster Neustift in German — is an Augustinian monastery founded in 1142 in Novacella, South Tyrol, making it one of the oldest continuously operating wineries in the world, with over 875 years of winemaking tradition.
The wine is produced from 100% Pinot Gris (locally called Ruländer) grown at elevations of 600 to 750 meters in the Valle Isarco (Eisacktal). Vineyards are planted in permeable moraine soils composed of mica schist, para gneiss, and quartzite, with south, south-east, and south-west orientations that maximize the short alpine growing season. The winery practices organic farming and produces approximately 6,000 cases annually. Three-quarters of the wine is fermented and aged in stainless steel tanks, while the remaining quarter is fermented in 30-hectolitre oak casks using natural yeasts, lending subtle texture and complexity without sacrificing freshness.
On the nose, the wine opens with aromas of apple flesh, pear, honey, wildflowers, citrus oils, and a flinty mineral character. The palate is bright and energetic, offering flavors of blood orange, nectarine, peach, melon, and crushed rock with a hint of bitter almond and delicate floral notes. Vibrant natural acidity from the high-altitude alpine climate drives the wine forward to a crisp, mineral finish. The wine carries 13% ABV and has earned consistent acclaim from major critics, including a 94-point score from Wine Enthusiast, 92 points from James Suckling, 90 points from Wine Spectator, and 92 points from VinePair.
