The Fuyu Persimmon Tree is a non-astringent Japanese persimmon variety that produces large, sweet, crisp orange fruit you can eat firm right off the tree — no softening required. Unlike astringent varieties, Fuyu persimmons have a mild, honey-like flavor with a texture similar to a firm apple, making them ideal for fresh eating, salads, baking, drying, and preserves. This tree is sold in a #5 (5-gallon) nursery container, arriving as an established specimen with a well-developed root system ready for transplanting into your landscape or a large container.
Fuyu persimmons are self-pollinating, so a single tree will produce fruit without a companion tree. The tree is hardy in USDA Zones 7–10, thrives in full sun (6–8 hours per day), and prefers well-draining, slightly acidic to neutral soil. Fruit ripens in late fall, typically October through December, and the bright orange fruits often persist on bare branches well into winter, creating striking ornamental interest. Fall foliage turns a vivid orange-red before leaf drop, providing multi-season garden appeal.
Plant in a location with good air circulation and water regularly while establishing. Mature trees reach 15–20 feet in height, though they respond well to pruning to maintain a smaller, more manageable form. Fertilize in early spring with a balanced fertilizer, and avoid excessive nitrogen which promotes leafy growth at the expense of fruiting. Costco periodically offers this tree in limited quantities in their garden center seasonal selection.
