Duckhorn Vineyards Howell Mountain Cabernet Sauvignon is a bold, age-worthy red wine sourced from the prestigious Howell Mountain AVA, the first officially recognized sub-appellation of Napa Valley (1983). Presented in a 1.5L magnum format, this wine showcases the power and structure that has made Duckhorn's Howell Mountain bottling one of Napa Valley's most acclaimed expressions since 1989.
Howell Mountain vineyards sit at elevations of 1,400 to 2,200 feet above the valley floor, predominantly above the fog line. The volcanic ash and red clay soils are shallow, infertile, and well-drained, stressing the vines to produce highly concentrated berries with thick skins. The cooler mountain temperatures extend hang time, developing deeper complexity and firm tannin structure. Duckhorn bottle-ages this mountain-grown wine one year longer than their other bottlings prior to release to encourage further development.
On the nose, the wine delivers aromas of raspberry-filled chocolates, black currant, mulberry, huckleberry jam, cedar, and spice. On the palate, firm mountain tannins frame flavors of blackberry, fig, and black currant, with bright underlying acidity providing balance and a long, layered finish. The magnum format is ideal for cellaring, with excellent aging potential.
