Cantina Zaccagnini Montepulciano d'Abruzzo is an Italian red wine from the Abruzzo region, produced from Montepulciano grapes using a marquee and espalier training system. The wine undergoes destemming-crushing and submerged cap maceration with temperature-controlled fermentation for about 15 days, followed by maturation in stainless steel on the lees until bottling. Some versions are aged for 4 months in Slavonic oak barrels.
This wine displays a medium purple-red color with violet hues. The nose opens to notes of red berries, plum, ripe blackberry, and spicy nuances of white pepper, with subtle hints of oregano, dried herbs, leather, and a touch of vanilla. On the palate, it is quite smooth and medium plus bodied with moderately acidic character, rich concentrated fruit, and nicely balanced soft tannins. Flavors include black plum, tart black cherry, dried herbs, lavender, and tobacco leaf, with moderate grippy tannins and a dry, long finish.
This versatile wine pairs excellently with cold cuts, cured meats, pasta dishes with meat sauces, vegetables and mushrooms, and is wonderful with pizzas with firm toppings.
