Founded in 1844, Penfolds introduced the Koonunga Hill range in 1976, naming it after a vineyard in the Barossa Valley. This 750ml bottle is part of their entry-level lineup but delivers quality well beyond its price point.

Grapes are sourced from multiple prestigious South Australian wine regions including the Barossa Valley, McLaren Vale, Langhorne Creek, Coonawarra, Wrattonbully, Clare Valley, and Padthaway. The wine is aged for approximately 10 months in oak hogsheads (300-liter barrels), lending it additional complexity and structure. The blend of Shiraz with Cabernet Sauvignon is a traditional Australian style, combining the richness of Shiraz with the structure of Cabernet.

The wine pours a deep purple with black highlights. The nose offers bright red berries, sweet spice, licorice, herbs, mocha, blackberry, and raspberry. On the palate it is medium-bodied with a mix of smooth and slightly firm textures, delivering flavors of black cherry, blackberry, bitter dark chocolate, and plum, with a mid-palate of cranberry, dried strawberry, and blueberry. Acidity is well balanced and tannins are present but approachable. Alcohol is 14.5% by volume. Excellent with grilled meats, beef dishes, hearty stews, and barbecue.
