Don Julio 1942 is a premium añejo tequila crafted to commemorate the year founder Julio González-Frausto Estrada established his distillery at age 17. This ultra-premium expression is aged for 30 months in recharred American white oak ex-bourbon barrels, just six months shy of the extra añejo classification. The production process begins with hand-selected agave plants that take seven to ten years to mature, which are then slowly roasted for 70-72 hours in traditional masonry ovens and double distilled in special alambique stills.
The tequila opens with a complex aroma of rich caramel, vanilla, honeyed eucalyptus, herbaceous notes, and subtle hints of cinnamon and citrus. On the palate, it delivers creamy caramel reminiscent of vanilla flan, complemented by tropical fruit, roasted agave, fragrant oak, dark chocolate, coffee, and mint undertones. The texture is notably smooth and oily despite the moderate 38-40% ABV. The finish is clean, long, and smooth, leaving lasting impressions of sweet oak, vanilla, mint, caramel-coated red apples, and light orange peel.
The bottle features a distinctive tall, elongated heavy glass design resembling an agave leaf, making it instantly recognizable on the shelf. This ultra-premium sipping tequila is best enjoyed neat in a brandy snifter to fully appreciate its intricate flavors and smooth character.
