Tarima Hill Old Vines Monastrell is a highly acclaimed Spanish red wine produced by Bodegas Volver from the Alicante Denominación de Origen in southeastern Spain. Made from 100% old vine Monastrell (also known as Mourvedre), the grapes are sourced from multiple vineyards in the Vinalopo region — including Pinoso, Salinas, El Maña, and Monover — where vines were planted between 1935 and 1970. These bush-trained vines grow in rocky, limestone-rich soils at elevation, yielding low quantities of intensely concentrated fruit.
The wine is fermented in stainless steel open-top tanks using indigenous yeasts, then aged for 14 months in French oak barrels. The result is a bold yet balanced red with a deep ruby color and an inviting nose of ripe blackberries, raspberries, blueberries, balsamic notes, and subtle floral qualities. On the palate it is full-bodied with firm, ripe tannins, flavors of black currant, wild herbs, mocha, smoke, and spice, with a lively mineral edge and a long finish. Alcohol content is 15%. Contains sulfites.
This wine earned a 91-point score from Wine Spectator and 90 points from James Suckling, and was named the #1 Spanish value wine of the year by Wine Spectator in 2024. It pairs exceptionally well with red meats, lamb, game, roasted meats, rice dishes, cured cheeses, and blue cheeses.
