Skylar Rae® cherries are a premium, trademarked cherry variety discovered by chance in 2004 by the Toftness family in Wenatchee, Washington. While working in their Sweetheart cherry orchard one rainy afternoon, the family found a single tree bearing distinctively different fruit nestled among the surrounding rows. Named in honor of the Toftness family's infant granddaughter, Skylar Rae, these cherries carry a heartfelt story and have earned a devoted following for their extraordinary flavor. They hold the distinction of being only the third cherry variety in the United States to receive its own price look-up (PLU) number, recognizing their uniqueness in the market.
Visually, Skylar Rae cherries feature a characteristic yellow-red blush skin similar in appearance to a Rainier cherry, and they are believed to originate from a natural cross between Rainier and Sweetheart varieties. What truly sets them apart is their remarkably firm, crisp bite and a concentrated, candy-like sweetness that defies expectations from a light-colored cherry. Their thicker outer skin provides superior bruise resistance compared to Rainiers, giving them excellent handling durability and a longer shelf life. These cherries are a strictly seasonal specialty, typically available in stores from late June through late July. This 1 lb package is sold in a clamshell container and is distributed by CMI Orchards and Stemilt, available at Costco and select specialty and grocery retailers nationwide.
