Royal Tokaji 5 Puttonyos Red Label is a lusciously sweet dessert wine from the historic Tokaj region in northeast Hungary, crafted using traditional winemaking methods from botrytized grapes. This 500 ML bottle contains an elegant wine produced from a blend of primarily Furmint (65%), Hárslevelű (30%), and small amounts of other indigenous varieties. The name "5 Puttonyos" refers to the traditional production method involving five baskets of aszú (noble rot-affected) grapes added during fermentation.
The wine displays an intense nose with lots of fruitiness and spice, featuring complex aromas of ginseng, dried apricots, yellow plums, brown sugar, honey, lemons, and tangerine peel. On the palate, it reveals great structure with honeyed smoothness and layers of dried fruit, white peach, and ripe plums, balanced by vibrant acidity and subtle earthy elements. The finish is long and lightly mouthwatering with notes of hazelnut biscotti and honeysuckle.
Royal Tokaji Wine Company was founded in 1990 by renowned wine author Hugh Johnson and a group of investors dedicated to restoring Hungary's precious wine heritage after the fall of Communism. The winery owns five classified first and second growth vineyards, including Mézes Mály, one of Hungary's two great first growths. The wines are barrel-aged in 13th-century underground cellars, with the unique character resulting from varied volcanic soils, indigenous grapes and yeast, and traditional winemaking techniques. Alcohol content 11.5% by volume.
