Castello Banfi Magna Cum Laude is a prestigious Super Tuscan red blend from Montalcino in southern Tuscany, Italy. The name, Latin for "with high honors," reflects the wine's exceptional pedigree, placing it alongside Banfi's other celebrated Latin-named cuvées — SummuS ("the highest") and ExcelsuS ("eminent").
The blend unites Montalcino's historic Sangiovese Brunello clone with international varieties including Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Petit Verdot. Each variety is vinified separately and aged 6–8 months to develop its individual character before the final cuvée is assembled. The blend then undergoes an additional 6–8 months of aging and is bottled unfiltered to preserve its full, natural complexity, followed by a minimum of 6 months of bottle rest before release.
The wine presents a full bouquet of blackberries and plums complemented by aromas of licorice, black olives, and pipe tobacco. On the palate it is full-bodied with supple tannins, vibrant dark fruit, and a long, structured finish. Grown in stony, calcareous soils typical of southern Montalcino, the wine reflects the terroir's capacity for depth and elegance. Alcohol is 14.4% by volume with total acidity of 4.7 g/l and residual sugar of 1.2 g/l.
Consistently awarded 92–95 points by James Suckling and Wine Spectator across multiple vintages, Magna Cum Laude is an ideal companion for rustic bean soups, grilled meats, and aged cheeses.
