Nickel & Nickel State Ranch Cabernet Sauvignon is a prestigious single-vineyard wine from Napa Valley's celebrated Yountville sub-appellation. Established in 1997 by the partners of Far Niente, Nickel & Nickel is devoted exclusively to producing 100% varietal, single-vineyard wines that express the distinctive personality of each site.
The 23-acre State Ranch vineyard sits northeast of the town of Yountville and is divided into two parcels by State Lane Road. Both older vines (planted in 1990) and younger vines (planted in 2005) grow on well-draining rocky loam soils, receiving full sun exposure throughout the day to ripen evenly and develop concentrated fruit flavors, ripe tannins, and deep color. Nickel & Nickel selects fruit from 14.5 acres of the vineyard for this wine. The wine is aged approximately 16 to 20 months in French oak barrels, with 55% new oak, lending structure and complexity while preserving the vineyard's character.
In the glass, it displays a deep, inky red hue with aromas of black currant, plum, blackberry, dark cherry, cedar, cigar box spice, and dark chocolate. On the palate, it is full-bodied with firm, coating tannins and layered currant and black cherry flavors accented by elegant clove notes and hints of wet slate on the finish. This wine has earned exceptional critical acclaim, receiving 98 Points from Decanter, 95 Points from James Suckling, 95 Points from Wine Advocate, and 93 Points from Wine Enthusiast. It pairs beautifully with beef, lamb, duck, grilled meats, aged cheddar, and rich savory dishes. ABV approximately 14โ15%.
