Alto Moncayo Veratón is a single-varietal Garnacha (Grenache) from Bodegas Alto Moncayo, a pioneering estate in the Campo de Borja Denominación de Origen in Aragón, northeastern Spain. The winery was founded in 2002 with a mission of producing world-class expressions of old-vine Garnacha from the high-altitude foothills of El Moncayo, the tallest peak in the Iberian Mountain Range at 2,315 meters.

The wine is crafted from 30 to 50 year old Garnacha vines planted primarily in the 1970s across vineyards in Tabuenca and Borja, with some parcels tracing back to the 1920s. Vineyards sit between 500 and 800 meters above sea level on stony soils of limestone, marl, dolomite, quartzite, and slate. The continental climate — shaped by Atlantic winters, Mediterranean summers, and the prevailing northwest "El Cierzo" wind — promotes slow, even ripening and natural concentration in the fruit.

Grapes are harvested in late October to early November and fermented in temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks for 12 to 15 days, followed by malolactic fermentation. The wine then ages for 16 months in a combination of French oak (225L) and American oak (300L) barrels, approximately 80% new. Alcohol typically ranges from 15.5% to 16%. Decanting for at least 90 minutes is recommended to allow the wine to fully open.

Tasting notes reveal a wine of deep color with aromas of chocolate-covered cherries, leather, sweet cherry tobacco, and dark roast coffee. On the palate it is bold and ripe, with flavors of cherry mole sauce, fig jam, cinnamon, nutmeg, clove, and leather, anchored by medium tannins and a warming, lingering finish. Pairs beautifully with lamb, beef, pork roasts, pasta, hearty stews, and aged cheeses.

The Veratón has earned consistent critical acclaim: 93 points (Gold, Best Buy) from Tastings.com and a 90.2 community average on CellarTracker for the 2020 vintage; 95 points from Decanter and 91 points from Wine Spectator for the 2022. Sold in cases of 12 bottles (12/750ml).
