Crape Myrtle (Lagerstroemia indica) is a beloved ornamental flowering tree or shrub sold in an 18.9-liter (5-gallon) container, ready for planting in your landscape. Known for their spectacular summer blooms, crape myrtles deliver up to 100 days or more of vibrant color from June through October, available in a range of shades including white, pink, red, lavender, and purple depending on variety.
These fast-growing trees thrive in full sun — a minimum of 6 hours of direct sunlight daily is ideal for maximum flower production. They are tolerant of most well-drained soils and, once established (typically after the first year), develop strong drought resistance. They are well-suited to USDA hardiness zones 6–10. Mature height and spread vary by variety, ranging from compact 5-foot shrubs to large specimens reaching 20–30 feet tall.
Crape myrtles offer four seasons of landscape interest: showy panicle blooms in summer, brilliant orange, red, and yellow fall foliage, attractive exfoliating bark through winter, and fresh green growth in spring. They are deer resistant and pollinator friendly, attracting bees and butterflies. During the first year after planting, regular watering is essential to establish a healthy root system. Light fertilization in early spring and annual pruning in late winter encourages vigorous growth and prolific flowering.
